SMALL MOMENTS · FULL LIFE

Birthdays & Birthday Celebrations

A day to celebrate one person, whenever their birthday falls in the year.

Birthdays have their own rhythm. The familiar little things can make the day feel like theirs before anything else happens.

How we celebrate

In our family, the cake is baked the night before and the decorations go up overnight. In the morning, we wake the birthday person with cake in bed, candles, and singing.

It is a tradition for the grown-ups as well as the children. Those few familiar things are the beginning of the celebration.

The evening before

Bake the cake and put up the decorations you want to use. Choose a few things you can enjoy repeating, even in a busy year.

A birthday morning

Gather for the song, the candles, and the cake. Give the birthday person time to enjoy it in their own way. Candles stay with a grown-up and a steady tray, away from bedding.

An idea to add: a birthday crown

Making a birthday crown is something I would like to add to our celebrations. A paper crown is enough to begin. The birthday person can choose the colors and decide whether they want to wear it.

One small moment to keep

Tell the birthday person one specific thing you love about them, or share a memory from the year. There is no need for a speech. One sentence can be enough.

Make it fit your family

Keep the pieces that feel good to you. Cake can wait until later, a song can be quiet, and decorations can be simple. A familiar gesture can matter just as much for an adult birthday as it does for a child.
